Recruiting Tip 4

Recruitment Research - Identify Your Target Companies

Once you have a written job description, understand who you are looking for and what your recruiting sources will be, you then can start identifying target companies. Target companies are those which you will find possible candidates. You will identify target companies based on the following criteria.

  • Industries names and divisions of companies
  • Geographic locations
  • Sales/revenue
  • Number of employees
  • Possible titles
  • Company culture

For example: if you were looking for a Director of Marketing for $100M Natural Products company in San Francisco, your initial list may have the following criteria:

  • Consumer products companies in the natural products industry
  • Companies or divisions that are $50-200M in revenue
  • Director of Marketing title at smaller companies
  • Manager or Director of Marketing at larger companies
  • Companies in San Francisco

Depending on how many companies you find, you may need to include companies in other industries, other sizes, or other geographical locations.

My favorite sites for identifying companies are:

  • Zoominfo.com - free company search tool
  • Jigsaw.com - company search
  • Linkedin - company search
  • Hoovers - the subscription site is much better than the free however, you can still get some good information.
  • Capital IQ

Your goal is to identify at least 25 -50 companies for your target list. Once you have those companies identified you can then start using all of your sources to identify potential candidates.
